The second of my Ensō series. Swimming above a turtle as I snorkeled the Looe Reef is an experience I will never forget. I have always loved the grace and power of a giant tortoise.
I have always had an affinity for Japanese culture. I began using terms from the Japanese language in my art back in 2016 with my wabi sabi series. Recently, I realized that I had been painting an ensō in the gesso of my paintings. It is a thick, textural gesso treatment, so the paintings change in the light. The ensō is somewhat lost under the painting and the rest of the texture, however, it is the foundation of each of the paintings in this series (and all of my paintings lately).
The ensō is described as a ""circle of vast space, lacking nothing and holding nothing in excess'. At first glance the ancient ensō symbol appears to be nothing more than a miss-shaped circle but its symbolism refers to the beginning and end of all things, the circle of life and the connectedness of existence." ~Egen, on moderzen. org
After the ensō is in the gesso, the painting then comes alive on its own as I allow the texture to guide me. Getting totally into a space of zen as I work. The creatures are not pre-planned, everything just forms out of the energy of the space. The ensō may not be perfectly visible anymore but it is always there. It is the essence of the painting... the connectedness of life.
